Queensland Museum- A Great Day Out For All the FamilyThe Queensland Museum is a great day out for both adults and kids. Providing a link between the past and the future it has many wonderful exhibits spread out over four floors and the admission is FREE.For me one of the most interesting displays is the Museum Zoo which is located on the 3rd floor of the Queensland Museum. It has a huge range of animals starting from tiny insects such as dung beetles and increasing in size to large dinosaurs. There is an explanation about how far some of them can jump in relation to their heights which you can then measure yourself against. Another of their permanent displays is Dandiiri Maiwar - the Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islander Cultures Centre. This exhibition shows how these two sets of indigenous people live and provides lots of information about their culture both past and present. They have some really interesting temporary displays which can last from a week or two up to a few months or years. Some of the special displays that we have seen include A Dog's Life which showed how animals are used to help humans. We saw how custom's dogs are trained and treated, how dung beetles were introduced to eat and bury dung and how dogs were used in the Vietnam War. Just before the Rugby League World Cup in 2008 we saw the exhibition on the history of Rugby League in Australia which was of particular interest to Gerry. SciencentreOn Level 1 you will find the Sciencentre which is science centre full of exciting, interactive displays waiting for you to come and try out. It is split into different areas:
Unlike the rest of the museum the Sciencentre is not free but the prices are very reasonable given how many hours you and your family will happily spend there without getting even slightly bored. Opening TimesThe Queensland Museum is open from 9.30am till 5pm daily. It is closed on Christmas Day and Good Friday and opens from 1.30pm till 5pm on Anzac Day.The cafe opens from 10am till 3.30pm on weekdays and till 4.30pm at weekends. There is also a souvenir shop with lots of educational books and toys and some interesting and unusual gifts. Where is The Queensland Museum and How Do I get There? On the corner of Grey and Melbourne Streets in the Southbank Cultural Centre the Queensland Museum is only a short walk over the Victoria Bridge from Brisbane City Centre. It is very near South Brisbane train station, the Cultural Centre Busway and has a large underground car park if you are coming by car.You can enter it through the Dinosaur Garden on ground level or by the overpass above the busway.
