Lamington National Park- A Bush Walker's ParadiseLamington National Park is home to many beautiful walks through the rainforest, some spectacular waterfalls and gorges and some absolutely stunning views from the many natural lookouts. There are two main sections to the park - Binna Burra and Green Mountains. This page concentrates on the Binna Burra section as that was the area we spent most time in and we did a few of the walks starting there. Starting at about 800m above sea level there are walks starting from various points such as the Ranger Station, the T Junction just before you get to Binna Burra Lodge or camping ground, the car park near the cafe and some short walks from near the lodge itself. All of the walks are fairly well sign posted and they vary in length from easy walks of about 1km to the arduous full day Border Track which connects the Binna Burra and Green Mountains sections of the park and is about 21km one way. Some of our favourite walks were the Bell Bird Lookout and Lower Bell Bird circuit where we were loved the views from the Bell Bird and Yangahla lookouts. We also really enjoyed the Rainforest circuit leading on to the Tullawallal circuit where we were amazed by the huge trees which were made all the more mysterious by the low cloud that was present for much of our time in Lamington National Park. It was fairly wet when we were there so some parts of the tracks were very muddy and crossing some of the waterfalls was a little tricky but still very enjoyable. Some of the tracks were even closed but we still found plenty to keep us amused in the short walks that we did. If there has been a lot of rain it is advisable to stick to the higher up walks. Unfortunately we didn't get to do any of the longer walks while we were in Lamington National Park due to the weather conditions. Some of them do require a reasonable level of fitness and experience as the paths may be quite rough and steep in places. You should be well prepared with good walking shoes and warm clothes as the weather is very changeable. The Ranger Station on the way up to Binna Burra is only open on Saturdays and Sundays when it is staffed with very friendly people who will give you advice about which walks will suit you. There are very informative display boards which should help you if the Ranger Station is closed. The Binna Burra cafe is open from 9.30am-3pm Monday to Friday and 7.30am-4pm Saturday and Sunday. They have a great breakfast selection, do burgers, nachos and fish and chips for lunch and have a selection of cakes available throughout the day. It has a lovely balcony area where you can enjoy a coffee and wonderful views down the valley if you are lucky with the weather. The Binna Burra section of Lamington National Park is about an hour from the Gold Coast and about 90 minutes from Brisbane. Coming from the Gold Coast you should head for Nerang and then follow signs for Beechmont. From there it is approximately 10km to the Binna Burra car park and information displays. From Brisbane you can do the same or alternatively take the Beaudesert Road to Tamborine then to Canungra and on to Beechmont and Binna Burra.
