Brisbane City Centre Restaurants and CafesThere's a wide variety of Brisbane City Centre restaurants and cafes. Many of the cafes are only open for lunch and are frequented by people who work in the city but the restaurants tend to be open for lunch and dinner. This is not a comprehensive guide to them and I've only written up places that we have actually eaten in. Jo Jo's - Upstairs on the corner of Queen Street Mall and Albert Street This restaurant has a lovely balcony overlooking Queen Street Mall and I love sitting there and watching the world go by. It's a few different restaurants all in one place and is a little like an upmarket food court. There's a Mediterranean section which does great pizzas and pasta dishes, an Asian section and another section which does grilled seafood and steaks. You order your food from the counter and pay for it then it's delivered to your table. We always try to eat from the same section as that means your food will come together whereas if you eat from different counters then it may not. From the pizza and pasta section I can thoroughly recommend the Super Supreme pizza, the Salami pizza and all of the pasta dishes but especially the smoked salmon fettuccine and the fettuccini with prawns and pesto which are excellent. There are four bar/restaurants on Queen Street Mall. Starting from the river there are Milano's, East's, Jimmy's and the Pig n Whistle. We just love the Pig n Whistle both as a restaurant and a bar. It's the only one of the four that has its own toilet albeit only one shared between males and females whereas the others ask you to use public toilets. Pig n Whistle - Queen Street Mall The speciality of the house in the Pig n Whistle is definitely steak and they are all cooked to perfection by the excellent chefs. They also serve a wide range of other foods including Bangers and Mash and Steak and Guinness Pie which can be washed down with one of the many draught beers or a lovely bottle of wine. You can choose to sit in the covered dining room or alfresco and watch the world go by. The only criticism I have of the Pig n Whistle is that the prices are a bit high for some dishes. There is another Pig n Whistle at 123 Eagle street which is very near Eagle Street Pier and it's a huge place with a lovely Beer Garden. Jimmy's - Queen Street Mall Jimmy's is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week. Located right in the middle of Queen Street Mall it is a nice place to eat and do some people watching but the prices are not cheap. The staff are very friendly, the food is good and the menu changes from time to time. If they have Spicy Chicken Salad on the menu when you visit you must try it as it's delicious. They also have a range of pasta dishes, steaks, salads and more. City Mall Inn Chinese Food - 245 Albert Street This is a great place to get some cheap Chinese food in the city centre. It's a cafe style Chinese with a huge range of dishes some of which are served on rice or noodles making them filling while economical. The quality of food is way better than the Chinese food in the food courts and is made to order. It's open 7 days a week from 9.30am till 10.30pm. There are always lots of Asian people eating here which is a good recommendation in my eyes. Cafe Mondial - 167 Albert Street on the corner of Elizabeth Street This restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and is a great place to go if you want a touch of the Mediterranean. Most of the tables are outside set back a little from the busy road so it can be a little noisy during the day but less so at night and there are a few tables inside but these are packed a bit close together. It's in a great location with proximity to the cinema and so on in the city centre. They do a special lunchtime menu and we found those dishes to be a bit on the small side - we do have big appetites so maybe they would suit others - but very tasty. The a la carte menu is extensive with lots of pasta dishes as well as many meat and fish dishes. The owner is very friendly as are most of the waiters and waitresses who come from various Mediterranean countries. Gilhooleys - 124 Albert on Corner of Charlotte Street Gilhooleys is a fairly authentic Irish pub with a large dining area at the back of the bar. They serve a few Irish favourites such as Irish Stew and Braised Beef in Guinness as well as a wide range of other dishes including 6 different types of Steak. You order from the counter and the food is delivered to your table when it's ready. The service is good and the food very tasty. Han Woo Ri - 70 Mary Street This Korean Restaurant is upstairs at 70 Mary Street and does a good lunchtime deal every day from 12 noon till 2pm. You get a choice of eleven dishes with a soft drink included for $9.90 which is fairly cheap. You can also choose from the a la carte menu which has a wide range of Korean dishes. There are always a lot of Asian people eating here which I think is a good sign and the waitresses are friendly and helpful. It's a lovely place to eat in the evening when it has more of a restaurant feel than at lunchtime when it is a bit cafe like. It's open for dinner from 5pm till 1am or 3am at weekends when they serve Korean, Chinese and Japanese dishes. Tin Billy Bar - George Street near Roma Street Station This is a backpackers bar which is linked with the backpackers hostel upstairs. They do great main courses for $9.95 each and they are all a good size. The burger and chips is enormous and the beer battered chips are excellent. We only found beer battered chips in Queensland so you should stock up on them before heading to other states. As well as the places mentioned here there are lots of pizza, sandwich and kebab takeaway places and there are food courts in all of the shopping centres that have all the usual options. They all tend to be pretty busy at peak lunchtime. Returm from Brisbane City Centre Restaurants to Brisbane Restaurants |
