Brisbane Bike Hire

Brisbane is a great place to cycle with over 700km of cycle paths available and if you don't have your own bike what better way to explore the city than hiring one from anything to an hour or two to a couple of weeks.

The main option for Brisbane bike hire is Valet Cycle Hire located in the City Botanical Gardens near the Albert Street entrance to the gardens.

Valet Cycle Hire offer very competitive Brisbane bike hire rates for "city bikes" which start at $15 per hour and go up to $140 for two weeks. These prices include a helmet which is compulsory in Australia, a bike lock and lights when hiring for more than a day. You will also be given a detailed brochure and guide when you hire a bike that will give you suggestions on where to cycle.

They also have tandems and children's bikes for hire.  The bike hire rates for children are 50% less than adults if they hire a child's bike and 20% less if they hire an adult's bike. They have infant seats that attach to the adult bikes available for only $5.

You can have your bike delivered to and collected from your hotel for an additional charge.

Prices given are correct at the time of writing but you can check them at the link above or you can contact them by phone at 0408003198.

Brisbane Bikeways

Both sides of the river have cycle paths running along the river bank. On the CBD side there is  path of about 30km while on the other side it is only about 15km. Bear in mind that this only takes into account off-road paths directly on the riverbanks but you can go further using cycle paths at the side of the road.

The cycle on the CBD side is lovely. You can go as far as the Regatta pub in Toowong in one direction and in the other direction you go through the botanical gardens, past Eagle Street Pier and under the Story Bridge along a floating, wooden walkway. Then on to roads for a short distance before getting to New Farm where you cycle past the edge of the park and continue on until the Powerhouse. If you want to keep going you cycle on road past some old warehouses that have now been converted into modern apartments. I love doing this cycle as you are on the side of the Brisbane River most of the way and you see lots of yachts and other boats along the way. You also get amazing views back to the CBD and of the Story Bridge.

You can cross the river at the pedestrianised Goodwill Bridge or the Story Bridge or even using the CityCat if you need to. If you find that you've cycled far enough you can take the Cat one way.  There should be no problem putting your bike on the Cat but this should be avoided at busy times.

As mentioned above there are over 700km of bikeways in and around Brisbane with some shared, some dedicated, some on road and some off road. You can find more information about the bikeways from the Brisbane City Council website.

It is possible to put bikes on trains, ferries, the CityCat and some buses but this may not be possible during peak hours.
